Al began his career with London Life in 1996 and holds his CFP (Certified Financial Planner), CLU (Certified Life Underwriter), ACCUD (Accredited Canadian Credit Union Directors) and ICD.D (Institute of Corporate Directors Designation) designations. Al is a nine-year qualifying member of MDRT. He served two terms as President of the Simcoe-Muskoka Chapter of Advocis (The Financial Advisors Association of Canada - TFAAC). Al was elected to the inaugural national Advocis Chapter Board and served as Chair during 2 one-year terms (2008-2010). He sat as Chair of the National Program Committee for three years. Al also served on and chaired the Governance Committee.

Upon completion of his term as Chair of the Advocis Chapter Board Al was subsequently appointed as a Director of the Institute for Advanced Financial Education, The Institute, and held positions on the Finance Committee as Treasurer, was a member of the Governance Committee and chaired the Professional Designations of Representatives committee. In 2014 Al was appointed as the Chair of the Institute for a two-year term.

A culmination of experience, Al was appointed to the TFAAC Board and has served for a period of five years holding such positions as Chair of Finance, Treasurer of the association, Secretary on the Board which had the responsibility as Chair of Governance. Al has been National Chair since June of 2018 and will become the Past Chair after the AGM in June of 2019.

Community involvement is very important to Al. He joined the Greater Innisfil Chamber of Commerce in 1997 and served three years as a Director on the board. He was elected Chair and served a two-year term from 2000-2002. In 2002 Al was elected to the Board of Directors of Peoples Credit Union, served as Vice-Chair from 2008-2010 and as Chair from 2010-2012 (a three-year term). During Al's tenure on the Peoples board Al was awarded the Accredited Credit Union Director's designation (ACCUD) from Dalhousie University. Peoples Credit Union successfully merged with PACE Credit Union and Al sat as Vice-Chair (2012-2015) of Pace through the merger. Al was previously a Director on the Board of PACE Credit Union with the role of Governance and mergers with other credit unions.

The Collaborative Practice of Simcoe County recruited Al to sit as an Executive Director on their board from 2012-2016. Al was responsible for finance and audits and member services which included creating networking opportunities for the membership. The Collaborative Practice is a group of professionals comprised of lawyers, family coaches (mental health professionals) and financial specialists working together to assist divorcing families to work through the transition of separation and divorce.

Al was very involved with Scouts Canada while his two sons were young. He was Chair of the Painswick Group Committee for Scouts Canada from 2002 - 2007. Duties included the organization, co-ordination and training of local scouting groups' leaders and volunteers. Al oversaw the finances of the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers groups under the Painswick charter. Al was a leader in all three sections, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts over a period of 10 years.


Al held a Director position on the inaugural board of “Leave Out Violence” from 2002-2007. This non-profit organization is a social services group for at-risk youth and is still operating in locations across Canada.

Al is an active member of the Honourable Guard of the Grey & Simcoe Foresters Regiment and is committed to the regiment's mantra to promote, educate and support our Canadian Armed Services.

Al enjoys a good dram and is the Past-Convener for the Simcoe Scotch Nosing Society. He was and continues to be devoted to his community involvement endeavours both within Barrie and surrounding area. He enjoys spending his time outdoors and this is reflected in Al's passion for photography. Many of the photographs that you see on this website were taken by him.

Al has been married to Suzanne for 29 years, and together have raised their sons Adam and Connor and continue to enjoy the company of their dog Gracie.
